Abstract
Recognition as one of the controversial topics in international law has not been compromised yet.
The reason that makes the issue problematic is based on the differences of states‟ political interests.
Despite legal requirements simply mentioned in the Montevideo Convention for statehood,
recognition has been still used as a political weapon by powerful states to eliminate others. In this
sense, it will be questioned how much recognition is a de facto element for statehood.
